Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas says Virgil van Dijk needs to show why he is the best defender in the world when he faces Bayern Munich this evening.

The Dutchman arrived at Liverpool in January last year for a world record fee of £75million and his impact on the Liverpool defence was instant and incredible.

After taking the Reds to the Champions League last season, he has now helped his side maintain the meanest defence in the Premier League.

His performances at the back this season have led to widespread suggestions that he should be nominated for PFA Player of the Season ahead of Raheem Sterling and other prolific forwards.

“It’s another big test for Liverpool,” Nicholas told Sky Sports. “Van Dijk missed the first leg, so if people are putting him right in there as the best defender in the world and winning player of the year by a distance then this is the game for him to step up.

“However, Bayern have returned to the top of the Bundesliga and are playing with a swagger now, so this one will be a difficult game for Liverpool.”

I must say I agree wholeheartedly with Nicholas. Van Dijk has been different class in the Premier League but he now needs to prove his value once again but this time, against one of the strongest sides in Europe and against the Champions League top goalscorer.
