Liverpool are interested in signing Ajax Amsterdam defender Matthijs de Ligt this summer but Barcelona are believed to be favourites to sign him while Juventus have a good relationship with his agent, Mino Raiola.
With Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all unfortunate enough to have poor defensive records, Liverpool are understood to be interested in finding a more robust partner for Virgil van Dijk.
Who better to partner Holland’s current national team captain at Liverpool than Holland’s future national team captain in de Ligt? The 19-year-old is already captaining Ajax in huge games and was instrumental in the Dutch side’s historic 4-1 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16.
According to Italian news outlet Calciomercato, de Ligt is “intent” on joining Barcelona at the end of the season where he would join fellow Ajax gem Frankie de Jong, who has sealed a £65million move to Catalonia.
The report also states that Juventus are in with a shout of signing de Ligt given their strong relationship with Mino Raiola.
Liverpool would be making an enormous mistake by not even enquiring over de Ligt’s availability.
A partnership between him and Van Dijk has the potential to be one of the best the Premier League and Europe have ever seen and spending over £60million on this teenager, in particular, would be fantastic business.
