Liverpool are reportedly ready to hijack Manchester United’s plans to bid for PSV Eindhoven forward Steven Bergwijn as the youngster has shown great form this season.

The 21-year-old has scored nine goals and assisted eight in PSV’s charge to the top of the Eredivisie this season and his form has caught the attention of scouts across Europe, with reports claiming that Liverpool are ready to hijack a deal for the forward.

Liverpool and United both sent representatives to watch the Dutchman in October and until recently, the Red Devils were believed to be in the driving seat.

Italian journalist Davide Dussode Cerame claims that AC Milan is close to agreeing a loan deal with an option to buy for £20million in the summer.

For Liverpool, with their strong financials, their position at the top of the Premier League, the draw of working with Jurgen Klopp and the fact that Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum are at the club, the Reds would be an attractive prospect for young Ste Bergwijn.

While Sadio Mane is still an elite forward, his frustrating form of late suggests he desperately needs competition and a young, hungry player like Bergwijn would surely draw the best out of a player that is teetering on the edge of being considered as world class.

The major difference between Mane and Salah is the former’s lack of consistency and with competition and the need to perform to be in contention to start is huge. A quick look at Jordan Henderson’s form of late is evidence enough to suggest the same could work for Mane.
