Liverpool are interested in signing Eder Militao as they look to bolster a backline beleaguered with injuries after the festive fixture list.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is the latest Liverpool defender to have his name added to the list of players sidelined with injury and as much as Jurgen Klopp says that he isn’t too worried, I doubt he’s overly happy having James Milner as one of his first choices at right back.
Joel Matip has just returned to training but before he did, Virgil van Dijk was the only fit senior central defender at the club. Klopp must be counting his lucky stars that van Dijk and Andy Robertson have so far avoided injury.
Both are currently irreplaceable and although the transfer market is open, any quality back ups would cost north of £30m each.
Real Madrid are hugely keen on Militao but, apparently, the Brazilian favours a move to the Premier League (English translation via Sport Witness) and this places Liverpool in an advantageous position in their desire to bolster their weakened backline.
The 20-year-old is capable of playing at centre back as well as his more natural right-sided full back position, with his versatility something that no doubt makes him attractive to Jurgen Klopp.
Militao’s contract has a £45million release clause, making him a little bit pricy but he is one of the most exciting defensive prospects in Europe and much like Joe Gomez, would help provide quality and cover for two positions.
