Jamie Carragher has revealed that he told Xherdan Shaqiri before the PSG game on Wednesday that Liverpool have to beat Everton in the Merseyside Derby at the weekend.

After yet another anonymous performance from Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner, fans are calling for at least one of Xherdan Shaqiri, Naby Keita or Fabinho to start at Anfield on Sunday.

Each brings increased initiative, desire to carry the ball forward and the ability to pick a pass between the lines.

Shaqiri seems the most likely to start, with Fabinho and Keita both liabilities in feisty derbies due to their snide behaviour and reputation for leaving a foot in 50/50 challenges.

Carragher said that when he bumped into Shaqiri in the mixed press zone at the Parc des Princes, he told the new Liverpool signing that he has to beat Everton on Sunday.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “I pulled Shaqiri on the way out in the mixed zone in Paris.

“He came over and said: ‘Hello.’ I said to him: ‘It’s the derby on Sunday and you have to win, you have to win.’ He said: ‘I know.’

“Shaqiri will play 100%. I think he’ll go back to the 4-2-3-1 system with Shaqiri on the right. Shaqiri seems to add something a little bit different.”
