Jurgen Klopp has downplayed fears over Roberto Firmino being fatigued and with Daniel Sturridge expected to start against Red Star Belgrade this evening, the Brazilian may well get a rest.
For all the defensive plaudits that this Liverpool side is winning at the moment, just as many questions are being asked about why the Reds’ front three still seem to be stuck in first gear.
Goals aren’t exactly an issue at the moment as Liverpool are still managing to find the back of the net but Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah don’t seem as sharp on the ball or as likely to put a defender on their backside.
One contributing factor that pundits and journalists have cited is fatigue and tiredness but Jurgen Klopp was asked about whether or not Firmino is tired after playing almost 70 games of football since the start of last season.
“No. He’s hard-working, sometimes better, sometimes a bit less, but good. That’s how it is,” Klopp told reporters at a pre-Red Star press conference on Monday.
“It will be all fine for sure. If he didn’t score in the last few games then… one in nine? All competitions? Didn’t he score against Red Star? That was the one goal he scored? Okay, good.
“I am not concerned. Things like this happen. He is a very important player for us. I was not really happy with our defending first half in London and he was involved in that. That’s what I’m talking about.
“In the end everything will be fine. We know about these situations. Sometimes it is clicking easier than in other moments, that’s all. There are no concerns.”
