Jamie Carragher analysed Riyad Mahrez’s penalty miss at Anfield on Sunday and highlighted the excellent research that goalkeeping coach John Achterberg put into predicting the way the Algerian would take his pen.
Liverpool drew 1-1 with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday and given that the home side never really looked like winning the contest, a point will be much appreciated.
Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane weren’t at their best once again, with there still questions lingering over their form after 11 games in all competitions this season.
However, the game could have been lost right at the end were it not for a terrible penalty kick miss from new Manchester City signing Riyad Mahrez, who skied his spot-kick after Leroy Sane was felled in the area by Leroy Sane.
While analysing the game afterwards for Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher revealed that he spotted John Achterberg gesturing to Alisson to dive to the right when Mahrez was getting ready to take the penalty.
“When I was up there in the commentary box, I could see the goalkeeper coach, you can see what he’s telling him,” the Liverpool legend said on Sky Sports.
“If that’s the way you’re facing, it’s top right. It goes exactly there, the keeper dives that way, and you see the reaction. That’s the work and analysis they have to do.
“We know Aguero is the penalty taker, but that is how far the analysis has gone now. There will be three, four or five City players who they look at.
“There must be something, a little connection, if you’re not quite sure, just have a look at the bench. He makes a signal. It goes over the bar, but he dives that way, and that’s the way the penalty goes.”
