Jurgen Klopp reacts to Naby Keita being stretchered off with serious back injury

Naby Keita was stretchered off with an apparent back injury against Napoli in the Reds’ Champions League group stage clash with the Serie A outfit.

The Guinean made a poor start to the game in Naples, lacking the industry and energy that characterise his game. When he pulled up, it was immediately clear that it wasn’t a run of the mill knock as he gesticulated to the bench for attention.

While it’s always concerning to see a player leave the pitch with an injury, what is most worrying about Keita is that he was holding his back and was then stretchered off the pitch – a sign that the injury could be very serious.

At halftime, Football Italia tweeted that they had word that Keita had been taken to hospital for tests, with the possibility of an X-Ray being used to discover the full extent of the injury.

The full extent of the Guinean’s injury is unknown and Klopp confirmed as much after the game when he gave his post-match press conference at the Stadio Sao Paolo.

He said: “I heard it’s a back problem, but we don’t know exactly – we have to wait.”

Liverpool lost the game 1-0 as they succumbed to a late winner from Lorenzo Insigne and as a result, the Reds are now third in their group after PSG beat Red Star Belgrade 6-1 earlier in the evening.
