Liverpool host Manchester City in the Premier League in just under two weeks and Ilkay Gundogan is hoping to take points off the current league leaders.
After six Premier League game weeks, the Reds are top of the table and lead Chelsea and Manchester City by two points, with both sides drawing one game already this season.
There are still 32 games to come this season so there is no point getting too excited just yet but if Liverpool beat both of their main title rivals in the next two weeks, it would put them in such a strong position given how difficult this current run of fixtures is for them.
Gundogan scored a beautiful goal for City on Saturday and speaking ahead of a trip to Liverpool in over a week’s time, the German spoke about how important games agains the top six will be this season.
“At the moment it looks like those games against the top clubs will be important,” Gundogan said. “We play Liverpool in a couple of weeks so it will be a real test for us at Anfield. Liverpool are a very strong team and Chelsea are, too.
“But it’s up to us in the end. We are trying to play like we did [against Cardiff] because, when we are ready like we were, our chances to win games and titles are the highest.
“All of us are hungry for success. We played an incredible Premier League season last year, gaining 100 points.
“We are aware it will get more and more difficult, our opponents are stronger than they were last year and we are the champions so everyone wants to beat us.”
