Jöel Matip was fantastic for Liverpool as he was brought into the side to take on Southampton, with his display earning a spot in BBC’s Team of the Week.
When team news for Saturday’s 3pm kickoff was released, Joe Gomez’ exclusion from the starting lineup came as a big surprise but Matip was perfect in nearly everything he did and proved that he is a more than capable alternative.
It’s not expected to be a permanent change but the fact that the Cameroonian was able to come into the side and make a positive impact is pleasing to Klopp.
Matip did have a few moments where he completely missed the ball and almost set Shane Long through on goal but his goal and defensive contributions earned him a spot on Garth Crooks’ BBC Team of the Week.
Crooks writes: “Something quite special is brewing at Anfield – I can feel it. When you have players who are out of the side and desperate to get in, and when they do they perform like they were never away, you know something is going on.
“Joel Matip was that player. The smile on his face when he scored his goal – not to mention the camaraderie between himself and Joe Gomez, two players competing for the same shirt – speaks volumes about the harmony within the dressing room.
“If I was Jose Mourinho I would be very concerned by all this.”
