Liverpool legend Bruce Grobbelaar has revealed how he almost blew his chance to join the Reds and his remarkable story involves Bob Paisley and an umbrella.

In the summer, Liverpool splashed the cash to sign Alisson Becker from AS Roma for a truly incredible sum of £65million and the Brazilian has made a noticeable difference at the back for the Reds.

One player that most Reds will never forget is legend Bruce Grobbelaar, who won six league titles and a European Cup with the club but he has revealed that his move to the Anfield outfit might have never happened.

Speaking to the BBC, the former Zimbabwe international revealed what might have made Bob Paisley vote against signing him for Liverpool.

“I was playing for Crewe against York City and Bob Paisley and Tom Saunders came to watch that game,” he said.

“When I ran in from the warm-up, our manager was shaking his head. I said ‘what’s the matter?’ and he said ‘those two very important people came to watch you play’. They had then gone to watch Stoke City play Port Vale instead.

“It was maybe because I was running outside with an umbrella to do my warm-up because it was raining.”
