John Barnes has predicted Liverpool will narrowly beat Tottenham this weekend but says the outcome of the game at Wembley will not necessarily play a huge part in the Premier League title race to come.
Given the manner of the defeat at Wembley last season, Liverpool will be desperate to beat Spurs when they travel to London tomorrow.
The game will be another test of the Reds’ title credentials but John Barnes doesn’t believe the outcome of the game will be remembered at the end of the season for being massively important in the race to win the 2018/19 Premier League title.
The Liverpool legend has backed his former side for a 2-1 win and says that Jürgen Klopp has eradicated his side of the issues which saw them lose 4-1 against Spurs last season.
Barnes said: “It’s going to be an exciting game. An attacking game. Both teams play attacking football.
“What I would say is Liverpool have solved the problems they had against Spurs last year, particularly at Wembley when Kane scored and Lovren made a couple of mistakes.
“This Liverpool defence is much stronger, they’ve got a stronger goalkeeper and the biggest thing for me is that they didn’t play well in the last game and won. I think that’s what let Liverpool down in the past – they had to play well to win, whereas now they look a lot more solid defensively and can still attack and score goals.
“I think it will be an open game. This game for me isn’t about who wins will challenge Manchester City for the league. So it’s not a do or die game for either team. But I feel with the confidence Liverpool have I fancy them to get a result against Tottenham.
“I’ll go for 2-1 Liverpool.”
