Lazar Markovic has been dropped to the Liverpool U23 squad after surprisingly staying at the club in the summer despite the chance to join Anderlecht.
After Stoke City was relegated last season, Xherdan Shaqiri joined the Reds in a deal said to be worth £13million.
The Swiss forward has come in to provide more quality in attack from the bench and his arrival means that Lazar Markovic is even more unlikely to make his mark at Liverpool this season.
Being made to train with the U23s further highlights his standing at the club and makes it seem even more bizarre that he didn’t join Anderlecht on deadline day.
Markovic has no place in Klopp’s plans for this season and with the Serbian not named in Liverpool’s squads for the Champions League and Premier League and with his contract with the Reds set to expire next summer, his career with Liverpool is all but over.
James Pearce writes that Markovic has been demoted to the U23s and took part in a behind closed doors game against Crewe Alexandra.
Crewe boss David Artell commented on the winger, saying: “Without a game at the weekend we used the time to take them to Liverpool on Friday.
“They trained with Critch’s under-23s and played a game behind closed doors. They had Markovic with them and he was a class above. It was a great experience and the players can really see the benefit of it.”
