Dejan Lovren declared himself to one of the world’s best defenders during the World Cup and Jürgen Klopp agrees.
Although he has a penchant for making disastrous errors at decisive moments in important matches, Dejan Lovren has been fantastic for the last 10 months. He really kicked on after the 4-1 capitulation at Wembley against Tottenham last year.
His form in the following months saw him guide Liverpool and Croatia to the Champions League and World Cup finals respectively. Lovren’s defensive displays in Russia helped guide his nation to its first ever World Cup final.
And after declaring himself to be one of the world’s finest defenders, Klopp has branded his centre back as world class despite occasional slip-ups.
“Lovren is a continued discussion that I don’t understand,” Klopp said. “There is no discussion when it comes to Virgil van Dijk. Dejan Lovren played the Champions League and World Cup final. Who hadn’t bought him after that would be crazy.
“He is a world-class defender who once in a while, only once in a while, has his ups and downs. But those are exaggerated to such an extent that I want to ask: ‘have you forgotten that he played fantastic for four weeks in Russia?'”
Lovren is out injured after aggravating a stomach injury at the World Cup but is expected to be fit again in two weeks and will certainly challenge Joe Gomez for the right central defensive slot when he returns.
