Chelsea are closing in on a £71million move for Athletic Bilbao’s 23-year-old Kepa Arrizabalaga to replace Thibaut Courtois, who is set to join Real Madrid.
When Liverpool signed Alisson Becker from AS Roma for £65.8million last month, there was a lot of talk from rival supporters about how the Reds overpaid and that no goalkeeper is worth that much.
Chelsea fans were very vocal about this, potentially because Liverpool beat them in the race to sign Alisson and they’re bitter but the fact remains that the Brazilian is a very good goalkeeper and will win games with the stops he makes.
Just a couple weeks on and the Blues are set to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga for a whopping £71million, breaking Alisson’s world record fee for a goalie.
Spain’s no.2 is undeniably a good goalkeeper but given that Real Madrid almost signed him for just under £20million in January, Chelsea are massively overpaying and it’s clearly a move born out of the urgency to replace Courtois.

At £65million, Alisson will be good value for money but Kepa is unproven and although he may well turn out to be a great player for Chelsea in the future, it’s a risky move and makes Liverpool signing Alisson look even more impressive.
Klopp has strengthened massively and with the exception of Manchester City who are already strong, none of Liverpool’s rivals looks that much better than they did last season which bodes well for progress in the Premier League.
