John Achterberg is widely believed to be responsible for the way that Pepe Reina, Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius deteriorated since joining Liverpool.
When Liverpool Football Club announced that they had successfully signed Alisson Becker from AS Roma for £66.2million, fans were over the moon.
Since Reina left the club in 2013, there hasn’t been a goalkeeper on display at Anfield that can safely be called top class or anywhere near being ranked alongside the world’s very best.
In Alisson, however, Jürgen Klopp has a world class goalkeeper and one that can be spoken of alongside the likes of David De Gea and Jan Oblak. Yet, questions still remain over the man who coaches Liverpool’s goalkeepers at Melwood every week.
Despite the concerns that supporters have, James Pearce has claimed that the former Dutch footballer has Klopp’s faith and that suggestions that he has made the likes of Reina, Mignolet and Karius worse are incorrect.
He told the Liverpool Echo’s live blog: “Achterberg is highly regarded by Klopp. Football is a ruthless business and if he wasn’t good at his job he would have been shown the door long ago.
“The idea that he has only made keepers worse is ridiculous. The Dutchman has worked under five Liverpool managers and his knowledge about keepers across the globe is huge. He was heavily involved in the decision to sign Alisson and he retains the manager’s support.”
For me, the proof is in the pudding. Reina was a world class goalkeeper and under the 47-year-old, he declined. Mignolet and Karius both came to Anfield with stellar reputations only to turn into clumsy, nervy wrecks.
