Xherdan Shaqiri has joined Liverpool from Stoke City and the Swiss attacker has made it absolutely clear that he is targeting silverware with the Reds.
The wait is over and Shaqiri has been announced as a Liverpool player after the World Cup blocked progress for a deal for the Switzerland international. It had been rumoured for weeks that he would make the switch but all the speculation is over.
With Shaqiri confirmed as a Red, Jürgen Klopp’s squad for the 2018/19 season is beginning to take shape as Fabinho and Naby Keïta have already been confirmed as Liverpool players.
The situation between the sticks is yet to be resolved as there is uncertainty surrounding what will happen at centre-half while Nabil Fekir is still odds-on to join the Anfield outfit before the close of the Premier League transfer window in early August.
At the moment, however, it’s far more enjoyable to deal with certainties as opposed to the many hypotheticals that the transfer window throws up.
And Shaqiri, in his first interview as a Liverpool player, has made it clear that he is looking to win silverware at his new club and it’s his arrogance that will make supporters all the more confident heading into the new season.
He told Liverpoolfc.com: “As a player you always want to be on the biggest stage in football. A few years ago I wanted to come too but it didn’t happen.
“I’m really happy that now I’m finally here. I want to improve myself too, I want to be with the best and I want to win titles. That’s what I’m here for.”
Speaking about Klopp, Shaqiri said: “He’s a big personality. The most important thing is to win games and win competitions. He has the hunger to do that.
“Since he came here you can see how the team has progressed. They are in the best way to win titles and that’s why I’m here – I want to win titles. I think we can achieve a lot.
“They had a very good season last season. I was very sad they lost in the Champions League final; that’s football sometimes. I’m looking forward to the new season.
“I hope we can do it together again and I hope at the end we have some trophies in our hands.”
The 26-year-old continued: “I played three years at Stoke and I know the league. I’m very happy that I’m here. I’m a player who wants to improve and this is the perfect place for me to help the team and help this club win titles.
“I want to win titles – that’s my ambition. I already know how to win from Bayern Munich, we won the treble and it was an amazing feeling.
“I’m confident we can win a lot of titles. The fans deserve to win titles. Hopefully, we have a good season and try to be hungry to win titles.”
