Liverpool have increased their bid for Besiktas and Croatia centre-back Domagoj Vida as Jürgen Klopp looks to increase his depth at the back for next season.
Having been linked to the likes of James Tarkowski, Jamaal Lascelles and Harry Maguire this summer, it seems as though Klopp has gone another way entirely by making a serious push to sign Croatian World Cup finalist Domagoj Vida.
The 29-year-old has developed an immense partnership with Dejan Lovren at the heart of Croatia’s defence in the march to the final of FIFA’s showpiece.
Vida’s performances in Russia have caught the attention of a number of clubs in Europe and Liverpool are keen on adding his experience and die-hard attitude to defending to their squad.
According to a report from Turkish outlet Fanatik, Liverpool have increased their bid for Vida from £15.9million after it was rejected by Besiktas and have come back with an offer of £17.5million.
The Super Lig outfit are keen to earn £30million from the player’s sale, however, after signing him on a free from Dynamo Kiev in January.
Vida is a threat in the air at set pieces and has been known to score important goals as Croatia have benefitted from at the World Cup this summer. That said, he does have a rather terrible haircut but I’d take him in spite of his horrible ponytail.
Elsewhere, suggestions that Georginio Wijnaldum will move to Newcastle United have been put to bed by reliable Magpies reporter Lee Ryder.
He wrote on Twitter, saying: “#nufc not in for Georginio Wijnaldum. His name was somehow dropped into a report in Turkey after Fenerbahce links. No approach from #nufc though.”
There have been claims that Wijnaldum – unhappy with his position in the midfield pecking order – wants to be reunited with his former PSV coach Philip Cocu at Fenerbahce and somehow that has led to rumours of a Newcastle return.
