Jürgen Klopp has welcomed Pep Lijnders’ return to his backroom staff and hailed him as a coach and a person.
While Željko Buvač’s absence from pre-season training was notable on Monday as things got back underway for Liverpool ahead of the 2018/19 season, just as interesting was the return of Pep Lijnders to the coaching staff.
After spending the second half of last season as manager of NEC Nijmegen, the Dutchman has returned to Liverpool and is likely to fill in for many of Buvač’s responsibilities as the assistant manager to Klopp.
While there hasn’t been a confirmation on this from the club, he will share a lot of the work that Buvač did with Peter Krawietz.
Speaking to the official club website on the second day of pre-season, Klopp said: “It’s good. It’s very, very good. We sent him away for half a year to get very important experience and to have him back now feels just fantastic.

“When he came in the building, everybody was really delighted about that and was really happy about it.
“He’s a fantastic person and a fantastic coach, so it’s really important that we have him back and I’m really looking forward to working together with him.”
Liverpool’s first game of pre-season is this Saturday, the 7th of July, against Chester and will likely feature new signings Fabinho and Naby Keïta.
