Liverpool have been linked with two English centre-backs in Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles and Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.
Although Dejan Lovren was much improved last season and was a rock in the Champions League run, Jürgen Klopp is eyeing reinforcements at the back.
After Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for £75million, there was a considerable improvement at the back, with Lovren and Loris Karius the primary benefactors.
While supporters would love to see the likes of Matthijs de Ligt or Kalidou Koulibaly sign for the Reds, it looks like Klopp and co. are targeting English talent to bolster the ranks.
A transfer roundup from the Guardian suggests that Liverpool eyeing up a contingent of English central defenders, with James Tarkowski, Harry Maguire and Jamaal Lascelles all persons of interest.
The writer, Paul Doyle, writes that with Maguire also being eyed up by Manchester City, it’s likely that Lascelles will be the primary target but the 24-year-old said recently that he isn’t looking for a move elsewhere.
In an interview with the Shields Gazette, Lascelles said: “This is the happiest I’ve been. I’m playing week in, week out, and I’m the captain here. The fans love me. I’ve got a good relationship with them because I love them. And we’re doing well, too.
“I’m very happy here. You hear things – you hear rumours and stuff – but I’m a young player, and I need to be playing football at a good club – and that’s what this is.
“Overall, it’s been an unreal season as far as I’m concerned, both for me personally, and, more importantly, for the club.
“This is the right club for me at the right time. We have a huge fanbase, an amazing manager, and this club is massive. It has so much history.
“As captain, I want to see how far we can go – and, potentially, take it back to where it belongs.”
