Liverpool could sign Sporting Lisbon’s Gelson Martins for free as the 23-year-old is making moves to cancel his contract with the Portuguese outfit after an attack on the side’s training camp.
Xherdan Shaqiri is being closely monitored by Liverpool, with Jürgen Klopp targeting a “multi-functional forward” to provide both cover and competition for Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino.
One player who would be cheaper than Shaqiri despite having a far higher ceiling on his potential is Gelson Martins. The forward filed notice with the Portuguese Securities Market Commission on Monday of his intention to break his contract with Sporting.
After “50 fans forced their way into the team’s training camp and assaulted players and staff”, Martins and several other Sporting players have made moves to terminate their contracts.
Martins is incredibly fast and is more than capable of beating his man in a one-on-one and while he will be looking for game time and won’t be a starter at Anfield, Klopp’s rotation policy will mean he will get plenty time to prove his worth.
More than anything, it will mean that the likes of Mané and Salah especially will be kept on their toes to retain their spots in the starting XI.
Given what he could offer, signing him for free would be an absolute coup and at just 23 years of age, he would fit right in with Liverpool’s incredibly young side.
