After reports emerged yesterday that Mino Raiola has met with Jürgen Klopp over a deal for his client, Justin Kluivert, the young winger has come out and slammed Ajax Amsterdam for blocking a transfer away from the club.
We, as Liverpool fans, are all well-acquainted with the actions of an ambitious agent. In 2015, it was Raheem Sterling and Aidy Ward that forced a move to Manchester City and in January earlier this year, it was Philippe Coutinho and Kia Joorabchian to Barcelona.
Agents are perhaps the most toxic part of modern football and although there are plenty good-hearted ones, there is no denying that there is a large number of agents that work around the clock to cause as much trouble as they can as that is where they make there money.
Agents don’t make the big bucks unless their clients complete a transfer and Mino Raiola knows this better than most. Justin Kluivert is trying to force a move away from Amsterdam and has publicly slammed Ajax for not allowing him to leave.
Kluivert is angry, though, with CEO Edwin van der Sar and Marc Overmars, who only informed him of a bid from Tottenham once it was too late. The 19-year-old missed his chance at a big move last summer and is keen not to witness a repeat.
Ajax told Dutch newspaper Volkskrant, via Teamtalk: “Spurs’ proposal was that Kluivert would play in Amsterdam for another two years and that he would then go to Spurs. We did not go further on that, because we wanted to renew Justin’s contract.”
The young Dutchman claimed club officials “do what they want” and has suggested that his time in the Eredivisie is over.
“I’m not renewing my contract at Ajax,” Kluivert told Volkskrant. “Ajax wants me to extend my contract so that they can ask for more [when they sell]. What do they really want? My plan was to stay, but a lot has happened lately.
“The fans think that it’s only about money, while everyone knows I had it good. I was not waiting for money at all. Football is important. I want to develop myself.
“I was more or less told that I had to sign up. Otherwise, I had to leave. Then you start thinking.”
On the offer from Tottenham, the Ajax number 45 added: “I heard that at the last minute.
“That says nothing about Ajax, but about the people in the club. Somewhere they were laughing. You see how the football world works.
“If you get higher up, it looks like a game. They do what they want. I’m getting that feeling again now: they do what they want.
“I had two years contract and thought, ‘Do it.’ My idea was to stay. But then it turns out different.”
Liverpool and Manchester United have both been linked with a move for the 19-year-old and with Mino Raiola handling his affairs, I expect Kluivert will get what he wants and will leave Ajax this summer.
Despite recent trouble at the club, the winger did downplay talk of a move to Manchester United in February, saying: “The chances of me leaving are slim. I haven’t spoken to Jose Mourinho myself. I know as much as you do.
“Rumours are always there, but Manchester United has never come up, and I don’t think it’s a logical step. A few more years at Ajax? Who knows, we’ll see.”
Do your thing, Klopp.
