Liverpool will not pursue a deal for £90m rated Thomas Lemar

Liverpool have cooled their interest in AS Monaco’s Thomas Lemar and will pursue alternatives this summer.

When looking at the interest that the Reds have held in Lemar, it’s easy to view the situation purely in the context of Philippe Coutinho leaving and Jurgen Klopp needing to find a replacement.

Yet, as Manchester City have shown this season with the incredible depth in quality they possess, having a couple top-notch players in each position is key to challenging and winning silverware.

At the moment, Liverpool are a few players short of having one of the strongest sides in the league and a creative midfielder is chief among them.

According to the Liverpool ECHO’s James Pearce, Liverpool have a list of targets for the summer transfer window and despite events over the last several months, Thomas Lemar is not on that list.

Earlier this week, reports from France indicated that the Frenchman had rejected a new deal from AS Monaco and although this may still be true, it’s irrelevant as the Reds are now monitoring other targets.

Jurgen Klopp feels as though Monaco’s asking price of £90 million can be better spent elsewhere.

James Pearce writes that Klopp’s recruitment team, which includes sporting director Michael Edwards, Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter, “are convinced that there are other players in that position who will be available this summer and are more suited to what Liverpool require.”

Social media has been awash with the names of players Liverpool could target and Real Madrid’s Isco is one that has been mentioned a lot as the best like-for-like replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

Of course, we will need to wait and see what happens but after all the drama of last summer, it looks like we’re in for another rollercoaster ride.
