Spanish press believe that Liverpool will go head to head with Real Madrid to sign Roma shot-stopper Alisson Becker in the summer.
With Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius still underwhelming in net for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp is looking for a new no.1 with the likes of Alisson and Jan Oblak touted as the club’s top targets in the summer market.
The former is the likelier of the two given that he will be considerably cheaper, with Paul Joyce reporting in mid January that Oblak has an £89 million buyout clause.
While Jurgen Klopp has just smashed the world record paid for a defender, it seems a bit far-fetched that the German will splash out that much on a goalie.
Both Alisson and Oblak are 25 years old and would be terrific additions to the Liverpool backline. According to Mundo Deportivo, however, Real Madrid are interested in Alisson and will go head to head with the Premier League stalwarts for his signature.
As we’ve seen with Javier Mascherano, Luis Suarez and most recently Philippe Coutinho, South American footballers are attracted to playing for the big Spanish sides and it would be massively impressive if Klopp could convince Alisson to join Liverpool over Real Madrid.
Having said that, unless Madrid sign an heir to Ronaldo in the next couple years, they might not be as attractive a proposition as they have been in the past. Zidane’s side is 19 points behind Barcelona and dangerously close to missing out on Champions League qualification via league placing.
Zidane’s first choice targets in goal are David de Gea, Thibaut Courtois and Jan Oblak – all of whom are very expensive in the current market. Alisson would be the cheaper option but viewed as being just as good.
Liverpool will be hoping Manchester United are robbed of David de Gea so they can sign Alisson. It would be doubly impressive as it would improve the Reds at the back markedly while a rival is weakened hugely.
