Phil Neville has suggested that the reason Manchester United have moved so swiftly to poach Alexis Sanchez from Manchester City has to do with Liverpool’s blistering form of late.

The Chilean will reportedly earn nearly £500,000 per week as he nears his move from Arsenal to United. Jose Mourinho is looking to add some class to his forward line with Romelu Lukaku not quite proving to be the striker that you’d expect when paying £90 million.

Jesse Lingard has been in the form of his life and Anthony Martial has shown glimpses of the quality that has seen some compare him to a young Thierry Henry but they are a far cry from their city rivals in attack.

Phil Neville believes that the reason for United moving so swiftly to sign Sanchez is because of Liverpool’s rapid improvement, with the Reds just three points behind the Mancunians.

Speaking on Radio 5 Live, Neville said: “I think it’s a sensational deal for Manchester United.

“I would have thought maybe a month ago Alexis Sanchez wouldn’t have come on the radar.

“All of a sudden, every now and again there comes a signing that you have to make, or if he’s available you have to try and make.

“Sanchez, because of the form of Liverpool in particular… I think it’s maybe hurried up the need for someone to come in and, not secure United’s second place, but actually give them a massive, massive boost.”

Neville continued: “I think United will finish in the top four and in second place but the form of Liverpool must be a worry because they’re playing unbelievable at this moment in time.

“And the Sanchez deal, I think not only does it lift Manchester United, I think maybe taking him off City gives them a little bit of a boost as well.”

Regardless of the reason why United have accelerated their interest in Sanchez, Klopp will be pleased with the form of his side after they extended their unbeaten run to 18 games with a 4-3 win over Manchester City.
