Defender Joe Gomez has given his thoughts on signing Virgil van Dijk, why Jurgen Klopp is a special manager and how Liverpool is the perfect fit for him.
When Nathaniel Clyne was ruled out of action at the beginning of the season, many supporters despaired that the options available to Jurgen Klopp were 18-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold and 20-year-old Joe Gomez.
Looking back, there was really no reason to worry with both lads performing at a high level throughout the season so far. Of course, both have made their fair share of mistakes but as young defenders in a hugely competitive league, what more could you expect?
Joe Gomez, who definitely has a bright career ahead of him, is ecstatic that Liverpool have signed Virgil van Dijk and cannot wait to learn from him in his bid to become a top centre back.
Gomez told the Mirror: “It’s great for me personally, because he’s one of the best in the world right now, long term if I want to play there then it’s a great opportunity for me to learn and see what he does.
“He’s got great attributes and that’s something I can look at and see what he does from day to day. That’s one of the great things from being at a club like this, you are around top players like this. He’s a massive presence not just on the pitch, but off it as well.”
Many have spoken about the presence that Virgil van Dijk has about him, praising the manner in which he carries himself. As a promising defender, Gomez is blessed to have such a talented defender around him in training.
Gomez has also praised the manner in which Klopp took care of him during his recovery from a long-term knee injury in 2015.
“When he (Klopp) came in, I was going through a tough time. He didn’t need to look after me the way he did,” added Gomez.
“He was always looking after my emotional state rather than talking about where I was at with rehab.
“He has such a good relationship with all of his players, knowing when to talk to you, when to leave you, and he’s been great for me, especially through the tough time I’ve been through. It’s something I’ll always be grateful for.”
Gomez signed for Liverpool from Charlton Athletic as a 17-year old and was thrown into the deep end by Brendan Rodgers, first playing for the senior side as left back. Even then, his potential was clear and although his progress was halted by injury, the English international has kicked on this season.
On signing for the Reds, Gomez said: “Coming here to Liverpool, with the history of playing young players, it was the place to go to if I was to move. They’ve not let me down. I can’t give enough thanks to the manager here, the club and it’s been fantastic for me.”
What have you made of Gomez this season at both right back and centre back?
