Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol believes that Liverpool would be well-suited spending the Philippe Coutinho money on Riyad Mahrez and Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Liverpool have sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £146 million and are now tasked with replacing him or strengthening the squad elsewhere and everyone under the sun is having a say on what Jurgen Klopp should do next.
One man who has had a say is Steve Nicol, former Liverpool defender, and he believes that signing Riyad Mahrez to replace Coutinho and buying kid wonder Gianluigi Donnarumma would set Liverpool up for success for years to come.
Nicol was asked for three names of players he’d like to see Liverpool sign and he chose Thomas Lemar, Mahrez and Donnarumma.
“To be honest, the Lemar one I’m not 100 per cent,” former defender Nicol said on ESPN FC.
“The reason I threw Lemar in is because when Coutinho was signed, there were big question marks over whether he could actually reach the stage he’s at now, that’s why he’s there.
“The other two I think are no-brainers. Liverpool need a goalkeeper, this kid (Donnarumma) will no question, I don’t know how many years it will be, will one day be the best goalkeeper in the world.
“Try and go at get him now and then you’ve got a class goalie for 10 years and listen, proper goalkeepers will save you between 10 and 15 points a season.
“That’s what Liverpool are missing right now with (Simon) Mignolet.”
Nicol continued, “And Riyad Mahrez, his actual stats over the last three seasons are just as good as Coutinho’s.
