Virgil van Dijk “expected” to be a Liverpool player “by end of window”

Liverpool have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk with reports claiming that he will be wearing Red by the end of the transfer window.

I’m sick and tired of writing about Virgil van Dijk – and Naby Keïta for that matter. The two players are Liverpool’s primary transfer targets this summer but are at clubs that are desperate not to sell.

In van Dijk’s case, Southampton are bitter towards Liverpool because the Reds have mercilessly plundered the South Coast club for the last few years, robbing them of talents like Sadio Mané, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne.

To make matters worse, Liverpool were last month involved in a “tapping up” scandal and had to apologise to Saints and publicly back down.

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool will sign the Dutchman by the end of the transfer window.

Liverpool’s most important position to reinforce this summer is centre-back, even if signing Naby Keïta is the more glamorous option.

With Dejan Lovren the default option to partner Jöel Matip in central defence this season, Klopp must sign van Dijk and he’s aware of that.

It’s likely that van Dijk won’t be a Liverpool player for Liverpool’s first game of the 2017/18 Premier League season and could even miss the Reds’ Champions League play-off scheduled for late August but it seems likely that he’ll wind up at Liverpool.

Having been ordered to train alone while Southampton prepare for the new season in France, it looks bleak for Saints and promising for the Reds.
