Joe Gomez wants to stay at Liverpool this season

Despite being linked with a move out on loan this summer, Joe Gomez wants to stay at Liverpool to fight for a place in Jürgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool might be having a torrid time in their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk but it should be noted that there are encouraging signs from within the club.

Joe Gomez is not half the player that Virgil van Dijk is but it is a shared belief that the young Englishman has a bright future ahead of him.

The former Charlton youngster sees himself at Liverpool for years to come and his battle to become an established first team centre-back will begin in earnest this season.

Gomez’ career at Liverpool has so far been blighted by injury but as he returns to full fitness, the 20-year-old sets his target on a place in Klopp’s starting lineup.

James Pearce reports for the Liverpool Echo, “Premier League new boys Brighton are keen to sign the 20-year-old defender on a temporary basis, but he has his sights set on forcing his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans.”

While Paul Joyce may have reported today that Liverpool won’t sign a centre-back if the Reds miss out on van Dijk, it’s unlikely that Klopp will begin the new season without having reinforced his defence sufficiently.

However, Pearce reports that Gomez will stay at Liverpool if Virgil van Dijk doesn’t sign for the Reds.

“My main aim is to play here for Liverpool and under this manager,” Gomez told the Liverpool Echo.

Gomez continued: “My target is to get regular football and I want to play at the top level and that’s what I am focused on at the moment.

“I feel 100%. I know that this pre-season is a big opportunity for me to hit the ground running again.”

Gomez, who is capable of playing at both right and left fullback as well as a central defender, is highly rated by the Liverpool coaching staff and well-liked in general by all at Melwood.

With plenty of football to be played over the course of the 2017/18 season, Gomez will certainly have plenty of opportunities to impress Klopp if he can stay fit.
