Jöel Matip admits he can do better for Liverpool next season as he vows to improve on an impressive debut campaign for the Reds.

There is no doubt that Liverpool’s Cameroonian centre-half is the most talented defender at the club and after an impressive debut season for the club, the former Schalke man has vowed to get even better.

After arriving from the Bundesliga last season on a free transfer, Matip cemented himself at the heart of Liverpool’s defence alongside Dejan Lovren.

Although many supporters have their issues with the former Southampton man, the two centre backs formed a solid partnership and contributed heavily to the Reds’ strong finish to the season.

According to Liverpool’s official website, Matip is not satisfied with his start to life in England and wants to improve.

Matip said: “I really like to have the ball. It’s one of the nicest things when you’re out on the pitch. I try to do my best: when to look forward, when to create chances or help my teammates in front.

“But I am very self-critical as well. I always want to improve myself. You have to work hard and keep trying and learning – that’s the way you get better.

“Before I came here I knew about the Premier League. I saw a lot of games and I had an idea what to expect. So I prepared right from the beginning. Maybe the top teams try to play a bit more, but every team gives everything in this league.

“The ball goes from one end of the pitch to the other, all the time, so you can always be vulnerable if you’re not at your best. You have to concentrate because in every match just one situation can decide it.”

With summer transfers being conducted and the speculation that accompanies the window, the talk around Liverpool has been that Matip will get a new centre-back partner this summer with Lovren to drop to the bench.

Virgil van Dijk was the club’s top target but all hopes of that taking place disappeared in the most embarrassing manner possible.

Kalidou Koulibaly has been tentatively linked too and would make a great addition but as of yet, nothing looks certain other than Matip’s resolve to improve ahead of a massive season for Liverpool.
