According to The Independent, Serge Gnabry’s arrival at Bayern Munich will open the door for Liverpool to move in and sign Douglas Costa.
While this is a very hypothetical transfer story from The Independent, it would also be very odd.
The idea put forward is that with Bayern Munich signing former Arsenal forward Serge Gnabry, Douglas Costa will be free to leave the club with Liverpool his most likely destination.
Last season, Gnabry enjoyed a very strong season with Werder Bremen, scoring 11 league goals. This form sparked interest from Bayern who have announced the German winger’s signing. Douglas Costa scored just three, playing most of his games from the bench and clocking below 1400 minutes of football in the Bundesliga.
For a player of the Brazilian’s talent and potential, he won’t be happy sitting on the bench even if it’s for Arjen Robben. Liverpool have been linked with his signature and with a move for Mohamed Salah seemingly stalled due to the club being unwilling to pay over the odds, a deal for Costa could be on the table.
Juventus and Barcelona are also said to be interested in Costa but if game time is his main objective, Liverpool would be the Brazilian’s best career choice. Not only would the Reds offer him game time to develop after suffering on the bench, Jürgen Klopp is renowned for helping young attacking players hone their skills to perfection.
Liverpool are set to rejoin the big boys in the Champions League next season with a two-legged playoff all that stands between the Reds and the famed European competition. Klopp is keen on bringing in a new winger to aid his side in their progress next season and Costa would fit the billing perfectly.
Given that he hasn’t played much regular football in recent times, Liverpool could get him for around £30 million which would be a steal.
Last season, Liverpool struggled whenever Sadio Mané was missing. The Senegal attacker’s absence during the Africa Cup of Nations contributed immensely to the dip in form that the Reds suffered during the opening two months of 2017.
While Klopp failed to bring in a new winger during the winter transfer window, the German manager won’t make the same mistake this summer. Although it would still seem most likely that Mo Salah would be the winger to arrive for Liverpool, Douglas Costa is a player that could arrive before August.
