According to reports, Liverpool’s £26 million target Luan will stay at Gremio next season despite claims that he had agreed on a move to join the Reds.
Two weeks ago, The Mirror reported that: “sources suggest a deal is close to being agreed with the 24-year old’s club Gremio.” Luan’s decision to reject a new contract fuelled belief that the Brazilian was eyeing a move to a European club for the 2017/18 season.
This was further fuelled by the report from The Mirror, which claimed that Luan’s business advisor Jair Peixoto and agent Gianni Losito flew to London in April and discussed terms with representatives from Liverpool.
Liverpool were said to be the frontrunners to sign Luan, with the Anfield club supposedly agreeing to meet his €30 million price tag (roughly £26m) and with Champions League football in the offing, a move for the Olympic gold medalist was said to be likely.
Now, however, according to Brazilian outlet Zora Hora, Luan has made a “u-turn” in his decision to join Liverpool.
What really seems to have happened is that Luan and his representatives used Liverpool as a way to get Gremio to offer a more lucrative contract for the Brazilian. According to The Liverpool ECHO, Luan is set to be offered a new deal which will include a clause that will protect Gremio from European clubs.
As the ECHO’s Joe Rimmer put it, “Mission accomplished.”
Liverpool are linked with a host of attackers ahead of next season. The likes of Mohamed Salah and Julian Brandt have been mentioned as players that Jürgen Klopp is looking at signing this summer.
Whoever the German has in mind, it’s likely that a deal is close given what he had to say following Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Sydney FC on Wednesday.
“The season is done. We have a bit of work to do with transfers and then at the start of July we begin pre-season. We have a lot to improve on, “Klopp said.
“I wish the signings happened tomorrow but the best scenario is that they are done for the start of pre-season.
“I don’t know if that will happen this time, we will see. But when they are all fit and healthy then we already have a really strong squad.”
Liverpool almost certainly have a few signings to announce in the next few weeks with pre-season due to begin in July.
