Liverpool secured a top four finish with an assured 3-0 win over Middlesbrough despite struggling under early pressure.
When Georginio Wijnaldum’s thunderous strike hit the back of the net, Liverpool fans across the world breathed a sigh of relief.
The game at Anfield started as many expected it would with Boro setting up to frustrate the home side. Steve Agnew’s side could have been awarded a penalty when Dejan Lovren climbed on top of Patrick Bamford and the forward went down but Liverpool escaped unscathed.
A great flick into Wijnaldum’s feet and an even better touch from the Dutchman set him free inside the Boro box before he unleashed an unstoppable strike into the back of Brad Guzan’s net to put Anfield on its feet.
Wijanldum’s goal allowed the hosts to go into the halftime break with a level of composure. Into the second half, Daniel Sturridge won the Reds a free kick in a dangerous area which Philippe Coutinho stepped up to convert in superb fashion.
After some very poor defending from Boro players and tireless work from Adam Lallana, the Englishman was presented with a golden opportunity to score which he finished well into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 to Liverpool.
After the third goal went in, the game began to fade out as Boro realised that there was nothing to play for. The win means that Liverpool finish the season in fourth place and will have to play qualifiers to make it to the Champions League group stage for next season.
Up the Reds!
