According to Read Liverpool, Virgil Van Dijk has personally met Jürgen Klopp and agreed to join Liverpool should the Reds secure Champions League football for next season.
Ste Hoare, a respected figure in the Liverpool Twitter community and head of Fresh Press UK, has broken the news that Van Dijk has agreed to join Liverpool if a top four finish is managed this season.
The article, found on Read Liverpool, suggests that Van Dijk is really impressed with the vision that Jürgen Klopp has for the future of the club and is excited to be a part of it and verbally agreed to sign a contract with Liverpool if and when Klopp guides his team to a place in next season’s Champions League.
The £50 million price tag – as much money as that is – is not an issue, according to Read Liverpool. Signing Van Dijk will require Liverpool to break their transfer record by £15 million, with Andy Carrol still the Reds’ most expensive signing. However, it’s a signing which is entirely necessary with goals being conceded like there’s no tomorrow under Klopp this season.
The report does mention that, as a fee or payment structure is yet to be agreed, Liverpool could miss out to one of Chelsea or Manchester City with their superior spending power.
Despite picking up an injury in January and missing the rest of the season, Van Dijk was immense for Southampton and would be a superb signing if Klopp managed to pull it off.
With Naby Keita and Alexandre Lacazette linked with summer moves to Liverpool, next season could be highly exciting as far as the supporters are concerned.
