According to The Express, Jürgen Klopp wants to sign Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas this summer and will face competition from Jose Mourinho to secure his signature.
Liverpool is on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League for just the second time in eight years. It would seem being able to offer European football has its benefits with the type of player that the club linked with of a much high calibre than last season.
The Express exclusively claim that Liverpool is ready to enter into a £30 million bidding war with Manchester United if Chelsea decides to sell the World Cup winner. The Spaniard has been used largely as a substitute this season, with Antonio Conte preferring to use him as an impact player from the bench.
Chelsea has been linked with a move for AS Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko, according to The Express. If Chelsea signs Tiemoue Bakayoko it would likely lead to the sale of Fabregas which could, in turn, lead to his purchase on Liverpool’s behalf.
But is Liverpool willing to pay his £170,000-a-week wages?
While Fabregas is not high on Liverpool’s shopping list, he is is just the sort of player that the club should be targeting. With his world class ability and experience of winning trophies, the Reds could hardly go wrong.
In games where Liverpool has struggled to break down teams that defend with a low block for 70 minutes of the game, having a player like Fabregas, with his passing ability, would definitely help towards improving on beating teams like Swansea City and Burnley.
The question still remains, however, of whether or not Liverpool is willing to spend 30 million on Fabregas and pay his huge wages. Personally, if Dejan Lovren is going to earn £100,000-a-week then why can’t the club pay less than double that to a genuinely world class player who has won trophies at each of his last three clubs?
The Express claims that sources close to Fabregas say that he won’t make any decisions on his future until the end of the season. The Spaniard wants to focus on winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup with Chelsea before deciding anything.
With Fabregas set to add two more trophies to his impressive personal haul, Klopp wants to bring him to Liverpool to aid the Reds’ next season in their Champions League campaign. The German’s side is relatively inexperienced but adding a player like Fabregas could transform the mentality in the side.
With the quality of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané up front, Fabregas would have plenty to work with as far as attacking talent is concerned.
This is very much a story that will only develop once the season closes and Rousing the Kop will have more to report as it develops. Personally, I hope we see Fabregas wearing Red next season.
