According to reports, Liverpool will face competition from Bayern Munich in their bid to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita.

Keita, who is said to be a more attack-minded version of Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, is high on Liverpool’s summer shopping list. According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds will have to battle Bayern Munich to secure Keita’s signature.

It’s likely that their ability to sign the Guinean will greatly depend on whether or not Liverpool finish in the top four this season and qualify for the Champions League.

It must be said that it won’t be easy to sign Keita with his performances in the Bundesliga this season attracting interest right across Europe. Bayern Munich are leading the race to sign Keita and Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are also interested.

Liverpool might have a slight edge of their rivals in that Keita’s agent, Bjorn Bezemer, also represents Sadio Mané. Of course, the mutual representation will be of little consequence if this season doesn’t successfully yield Champions League football.

There have been suggestions that Keita could be a replacement for Emre Can with the German currently deadlocked with the club over wage demands. There are conflicting reports regarding what Can and his representatives are asking for but it’s clear that Liverpool are unwilling to meet their demands.

Déjá vu á la Sterling.

Regardless of what may or may not be happening between Can and the club behind closed doors, Keita would be a fabulous signing. The Bundesliga midfielder has all the right skills and attributes required to be a success under Jürgen Klopp.

Speed, energy and intelligence are a classic combination that Keita possesses and would make him a success at Liverpool. There are few doubts regarding his ability to perform as a Red but there are doubts that Klopp and co. could pull off such a stunning signing.

Keita is very versatile and this is something which is likely to appeal to Klopp given the fluid nature of his tactical system. The 22-year-old is both a goalscoring threat, a creative force and defensively sound. He is very close to being the complete package and his playing style has drawn comparisons with N’Golo Kante.

Although signing Keita would raise the level of quality in Liverpool’s midfield, what the Reds really need is a midfield enforcer like Javier Mascherano who will commit to nothing but defence.

That being said, you won’t find me arguing if Liverpool sign Keita this summer.
