Liverpool were highly interested in signing Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic last summer and the talented youngster has commented on the Reds’ interest.
Last summer, Liverpool were denied in their approach to Borussia Dortmund to sign Christian Pulisic. There has been a lack of wide players this season, especially when Jürgen Klopp has been able to field star signing Sadio Mané and the signing of Pulisic could have prevented the mid-season capitulation which occurred in the Senegal attacker’s absence.
Since rejecting Liverpool’s offer, Borussia Dortmund have signed Pulisic to a new deal at the Westfalenstadion which will keep him there until 2020. The American has played an important part in Dortmund’s season and, alongside Ousmane Dembele, represents the power of the youth at the Bundesliga club.
Almost rubbing salt in the wounds, Pulisic has revealed that although he admires former manager Klopp, there was never any chance of a reunion at Liverpool despite reports that it could and should.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, Pulisic said, “I have respect for Klopp and I know him – he was very welcoming to me here – but I was never really thinking about going to Liverpool.
“Borussia Dortmund have given me everything. If I work very hard here, I will play, and I love this club.
“I’m happy in the city, I’m just really content with everything here at the moment.”
It’s quite poignant that Pulisic mentions that he plays regularly for Dortmund as it might indicate that, with the 4-3-3 formation Klopp employs and players like Coutinho and Mané on the flanks, perhaps he feels as though he would be little more than a squad player.
Pulisic was touted as being a primary target for Klopp this summer and has already been ruled out. The only positive thing about missing out on him now is that it gives Liverpool time to adjust and find a better and more suitable target.
