Melissa Reddy claims that Jürgen Klopp could offer Mario Götze the chance to revive his career at Liverpool.
A big distinction between this upcoming summer and last summer is that Mario Götze needs the move to Liverpool more than they need him. The German snubbed the Reds in favour of Champions League and familiar settings.
It was a move which rubbed many a Liverpool fan the wrong way. Götze was supposed to be Liverpool’s marquee signing and take them to the next level. Almost karmically, the Reds bought Sadio Mané for £36 million – a bargain. The Senegal attacker has 12 goals and five assists in 24 games this season and missed a month when he was at the Africa Cup of Nations, yet he is still the Reds’ top goalscorer.
In recent weeks, Götze has been diagnosed with a metabolic disorder reported as being myopathy and is seeking treatment. According to Goal’s Melissa Reddy, Jürgen Klopp is prepared to offer the World Cup Winner a chance to revitalise his career on Merseyside.
There are a number of people who aren’t supportive of Liverpool returning for Götze if he decided last summer that he didn’t want to play for the club. While I am inclined to agree, if Klopp can help him return to fitness and form, then Liverpool would have an absolute gem on their hands.
Not only is Götze very talented, he has Champions League experience, a tournament Liverpool may well qualify for next season. There are very few players in Liverpool’s squad that have played extensively in the Champions League and this could hurt them next season.
There are several variables that could come into play in this transfer and many of them could wind up as a waste of money for Liverpool. The absolute worse case scenario is that Liverpool focus too much attention on Götze and fail to address more pressing issues in the squad like left back, centre back and defensive midfield.
It’s certainly an interesting report, however, we will need to wait to find out if there is any truth to it.
