Liverpool were victorious over a rather un-inspiring Arsenal side which started the game with Alexis Sánchez from the bench.
Two first half goals from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané, who assisted each other’s goals, set the tone for the game to follow. Liverpool’s first half can be described by slick football and the exposure of Arsenal’s poor defending.
It’s no surprise to see how Bayern Munich managed to put five past them at the Allianz Arena. Despite Liverpool’s well-publicised defensive issues, Arsenal aren’t exactly the model for perfection either. In 26 Premier League games this season, the Gunners have conceded 31 goals, just three less than a Liverpool defence which is crucified week on week.
Liverpool made relatively light work of a defence made up of Laurent Koscielny, a supposedly world class centre-half, the £35 million Shkodran Mustafi and Hector Bellerin, who is hyped up as the right-back version of Jordi Alba.
Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané seemed to have clicked again after several months of inconvenient interruptions. Between them, combined with the industrious creativity of Adam Lallana, Liverpool unlocked Arsenal’s defence three times to win the game 3-1.
