Riyad Mahrez is reportedly a priority for Liverpool in the summer with the Premier League champion identified as a player who can add quality to the Reds’ side.
Liverpool have struggled for form in the New Year and while Riyad Mahrez has hardly been a beacon of light as far as attacking prominence is concerned, his exploits with Leicester in their title-winning season have not been forgotten.
There are concerns about the current lack of depth across the Liverpool squad with there being a particular lack of wingers aside from new signing Sadio Mané. The former Southampton player has scored 11 goals and provided four assists in 23 Premier League games this season, per Squawka.
Aside from Mané, however, Liverpool don’t really have another winger of note. Philippe Coutinho does operate from the left flank but is more of a left forward than a left wing. Mahrez hugs the touchline and stretches opposition backlines, which often creates acres of spaces for the speedy Jamie Vardy to exploit.
Liverpool have made Riyad Mahrez a priority for the summer
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Leicester City’s magician Mahrez is a top priority for the summer transfer window.
There are a few questions to be asked about the reliability of the source of this rumour. If there is any weight behind this claim, however, one still needs to be wary. As with any Leicester player this season, you need to question the mentality of a player that goes from winning a league title straight to relegation troubles.
Is that really a player Liverpool wants? Last summer, Klopp signed Georginio Wijnaldum and although he has quality to him, shown by the fact that he was relegated with Newcastle Untied last season, he often goes missing in games where he really ought to step up and perform.
If Mahrez proved to be a player like this, it would be very costly. Leicester are certain to demand exorbitant fees for Mahrez and he needs to perform consistently if he commands a transfer fee in excess of £30 million.
