Rousing the Kop brings you an injury update ahead of Liverpool’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Southampton at Anfield tonight.
Liverpool lost 3-2 to Swansea City at the weekend and captain Jordan Henderson seemed to be off the pace by a large margin. The former Sunderland man is carrying a heel injury and is playing through the pain which is limiting his mobility and could potentially be an issue tonight against the Saints.
Jürgen Klopp gave an update on the injury saying, “When the team are out running for recovery, he’s on a bike is what he does different.
“He always feels a little bit, but he can cope with it.”
It might sound overly protective, but it’s never good to have a player force himself to play through pain – regardless of whether or not he’s the captain or not. Henderson has become an immensely important player in this team and if he were to become seriously injured, Liverpool’s chances of silverware and top four would be seriously threatened.
Onto Southampton’s team news. It’s good news for Liverpool.
Manager Claude Puel says that Virgil Van Dijk might miss the game tonight with an ankle injury sustained in a 3-0 win over Premier League champions Leicester City.
Jose Fonte’s transfer to West Ham and the loss of Van Dijk to injury could see Southampton’s defence seriously compromised with a genuine lack of experience in reserve.
“Van Dijk, he is having a scan and I am waiting for the results at the moment,” Puel told Southampton’s official website.
“It’s not serious, but I don’t know if he can participate in this game. We will see in the next days before the game.”
It’s never nice for professionals to get injured but I’m crossing thumbs on this one.
