According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via the Liverpool Echo, Ivan Perišić has caught the interest of the coaching staff at Liverpool and is now being monitored by the Merseyside club.
There are a number of things wrong with this transfer rumour.
Firstly, Jürgen Klopp sold the Croatian on the cheap when he was at Borussia Dortmund as he clearly didn’t feel he could add anything to his side or was suited to his gegenpressing style of play.
And secondly, although the Reds have been reported as being interested in Perišić in the past, it has become painstakingly clear that Liverpool won’t be dealing in this transfer window which rules out a move for Perisic, or anyone for that matter.
If that doesn’t convince you, it’s also being reported in the ECHO that Chelsea and Manchester United are also interested which will damage Liverpool’s chances given the formers’ financial power.
While it might be a certainty that Perišić won’t be pulling a Liverpool shirt on come February, there is no denying that since Sadio Mane left to join Senegal for the African Cup of Nations, Liverpool’s form has taken a dive and have failed to win a Premier League game in three weeks.
That being said, Jürgen Klopp does have a number of players looking to return to form and fitness after injuries and suspension. Philippe Coutinho played just over 50 minutes against Swansea City at the weekend and Jöel Matip played just over 50 seconds, but despite the crushing defeat at the hands of the Welsh side, there is reason to be optimistic.
A chance for salvation on Wednesday through the EFL Cup beckons as Anfield welcomes Southampton for the second leg of the semi-final.
