Jurgen Klopp spoke to the media today ahead of the first leg of an EFL Cup semi-final against Southampton.

Liverpool are second in the Premier League, just five points behind league leaders Chelsea who are a point away from hitting half a century. Southampton are 10th and a full 20 points behind the Reds. That, however, is irrelevant as cup games often pay no mind to the form of a league team.

The last time the two sides met in the league cup, Divock Origi scored a hattrick in a game which ended 6-1 to Liverpool.

Philippe Coutinho might be on the bench for the game after missing the entirety of the festive period through injury after damaging ankle ligaments in November against Sunderland.

“I think Phil is fit enough to be part of the squad. There could be minutes, how many I don’t know,” Klopp said.

“It was six or seven weeks out, that’s long. He needs minutes in training and as soon as possible minutes in games. There’s no final decision.

“He’s had his third complete session with the team, and tomorrow will be his fourth.”

The two-legged semi-final offers the opportunity to meet Manchester United, should they beat Hull City in their two-legged semi-final, in what would be a very special final at Wembley at the end of February.
