Merry Christmas! And welcome to the inevitable barrage of silly transfer rumours. Okay, nobody actually believes Luis Suarez is ever going to return to Liverpool, but still, it’s Christmas…

Wouldn’t that be the ideal, albeit slightly creepy, present? Luis Suarez under Jurgen Klopp’s tree wrapped in Barca-themed gift-wrap, holding a card reading, “Season’s greetings, Jurgen. From John.”

I’ve had too much eggnog. According to John Aldridge, Liverpool should forgo logic and not bother signing decent centre-halves and break the bank in a surprise effort to re-sign Luis Suarez.

“The squad is quite good to be honest because we’re not in Europe,” Aldridge told “Coutinho is coming back soon and Matip and Gomez too. Plus, the young lads have plenty of potential. The manager will know if he needs to buy one but if the right man isn’t available he’ll play the kids. Money is available but he won’t go out and buy for the sake of it. Personally, I’d go and get Suarez.”

Although Liverpool are the Premier League’s highest-scoring team, they are entirely vulnerable at the back and have conceded 20 goals this season. But Aldridge doesn’t think it’s as much of an issue as many make it out to be.

“There have been some hiccups but the Bournemouth game apart, defensively Liverpool have been good,” he added.

“That’s the fifth clean sheet in the last eight which isn’t bad, is it? Mignolet in goal has been a calming influence while Klavan can dominate at the back – he’s a very old-fashioned centre-back – and has been excellent. For me, though, Matip is possibly the signing of the summer.”

If John W. Henry ticked off Jurgen Klopp’s Christmas list and signed Luis Suarez then Matip would be usurped as the best signing at the club – but that’s the eggnog talking again.

Just like you, I am a hugely passionate Liverpool supporter. I started Rousing the Kop in January 2015 and since then it has grown tremendously and has even been nominated as 'Best New Football Blog' in the Football Blogging Awards.

  1. We can dream but, let’s be honest, there is more chance of Santa landing in the Stoke penalty area and heading a winner in the last minute than that happening. We need a prolific striker – who doesn’t? – and a new keeper and both LB and CB but we can’t afford to spend our entire transfer budget for the next 18 months on one player, no matter who he is or how good he is . . . Messi apart!
If we are to spend £90m I’d go for van Dijk, Hart and Hector! If we get rid of wastes of space like Sakho and decent squad players like Lovren and Lucas we might cobble together enough for a new striker but I doubt very much if it would be Suarez!!!!
