With the January transfer window looming ahead, Liverpool have made a proposal to sign Santos’ Thiago Maia.
Liverpool haven’t had a quality specialist defensive midfielder since Javier Mascherano joined Barcelona. Santos’ Thiago Maia is just that. The Olympic Gold winner is one of Brazil’s most exciting young prospects and has a range of suitors stretching to Russia.
According to ESPN Brazil, Liverpool, Monaco, Schalke, Napoli and Zenit St Petersburg are all monitoring his progress and the report also says that the Reds have already made a proposal to Santos.
The reports makes it clear that Zenit have made a bid with an initial offer of £15 million but their offer was immediately turned down. The belief is that, with a strong Brazilian contingent at Liverpool, Santos and Maia’s representatives will view Liverpool as an ideal destination for the 19-year-old.
Maia has made it clear that he will let Santos and his representatives decide his future and won’t get involved in transfer negotiations
He said: ”I’m on vacation, it’s been a lot of work, but a very important year in my career, I was an Olympic champion and, in Santos, we had a regular season, the Sao Paulo title and the Brazilian runner-up.
“The Saints and my representatives decide if it’s time for a transfer.
“If it’s to stay, the supporters can rest easy, I want to repeat the good season, play Libertadores and be a champion.”
