According to Sky Sports, Emre Can and Joel Matip have been passed fit to play in this evening’s Merseyside Derby.

There were fears that Joel Matip and Emre Can wouldn’t recover from respective injuries in time to play Everton but according to Sky Sports, both will be in the squad to face Liverpool’s city rivals.

As much as Ragnar Klavan and Georginio Wijnaldum have performed admirably in the former duo’s absence, the nature of a derby will require the steel that Matip and Can have to their game. Liverpool are more defensively capable when they have their Cameroonian centre-half at the back and are yet to lose a game with the former Schalke defender in the lineup – 10 wins out of 14 games.

While Matip and Can might return to the side, there is no word on Daniel Sturridge which could mean the forward is still incapacitated by a calf strain. Similarly, there are no reports indicating that Divock Origi will be fit to play at Goodison Park tonight, although, the Belgian is not so seriously injured as Sturridge – as Klopp made clear in his post-Middlesbrough press conference.

Kickoff is at 20h00 GMT and offers Liverpool the chance to return to second after Manchester City leapfrogged them with a 2-1 win over Arsenal.
