Liverpool set to bid for £27m Bundesliga winger but would this player be better?

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are ready to bid again for Christian Pulisic in the January transfer window to provide cover for Sadio Mane.

Liverpool will be without Mane for a month when the winger goes to the African Cup of Nations for a month in January. His form this season has been sensational and he has managed to score four goals and grab two assists in nine Premier League games. He will be missed and it’s up to Liverpool’s new sporting director Michael Edwards to seek out his short-term replacement.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool will chance their arm in January and that it will take close to £27 million to interest Borussia Dortmund. It’s really a bit bizarre that in 2016 promising young footballers go for around £30 million when it took a similar fee for Real Madrid to sign David Beckham back in 2003.

Anyway, Liverpool are keen to sign a player blessed with pace similar to that which makes defenders so scared of Sadio Mane. Pulisic fits this description, despite being a lot less pacey than the Senegal sprinter, but he has far more nuance to his game and would do well at adapting to a role which Philippe Coutinho has matured in.

If Borussia Dortmund don’t agree to sell their promising young winger, Liverpool will be forced to turn their attention elsewhere. A player who could be well suited to filling in for Mane would be Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams.

The Spaniard is very fast and is a natural winger – something that Liverpool has a definite lack of. When Mane returns it wouldn’t hurt to have more than one wide option and with Sheyi Ojo developing nicely, Jurgen Klopp could have a very pacy squad at his disposal, making his attacking lineup a different proposition to what it currently is.

Unfortunately, Williams has already dismissed rumours linking him with Liverpool saying, “I’m happy at Athletic, it’s where I want to be,” Williams told AS Diario, via Goal. ”

“I am very grateful to the fans, the club and my team-mates. I want to continue here for many more years. I want to be Athletic’s future number nine – the player who raises the roof at San Mames every week and scores lot of goals.”

Despite the player declaring his love for Bilbao, I’d be curious to see what his reaction to a phone call from Jurgen Klopp would be. His pace and raw talent under Klopp’s tutelage is the perfect recipe for success as Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Roberto Lewandowski can testify to.

As with any transfer rumour, we can only have total clarity in due time but at the end of the day, Klopp will have his targets in mind and he alone knows who is best suited to play under him.
