Stan Collymore says Liverpool's £25 million midfielder has been "hit and miss"

October 30, 2016

Stan Collymore doesn’t believe that Georginio Wijnaldum is playing his best football in a Liverpool shirt just yet.

The Dutch midfielder has been hugely important to Liverpool’s massively impressive start to the season which has seen the Reds pick up 23 points in 10 games.

When Liverpool signed Wijnaldum from Newcastle for a reported £25 million fee, there were a lot of questions raised about why Liverpool was signing another attacking midfielder and there was mass uncertainty. Of course, Jurgen Klopp knew where he’d fit in and, boy, has he fit in.

Such has been the Dutchman’s form that Emre Can has been limited to just two Premier League starts – the midfielder netted for Liverpool last night against Palace and will be looking to continue scoring goals for the club.

There has been a widespread social media debate over who should start in midfield for Liverpool: Can or Wijnaldum. The German cracked the nod last, but it may have been because the latter is still recovering from a hip issue.

Wijnaldum was introduced from the bench against Crystal Palace last night and his impact on the game was tangible. He slowed the tempo down from the frightful pace which made it seem likely that the hosts would snatch at least two points away from Liverpool.

Even though Liverpool’s £25 million summer signing has come in for a lot of praise this season, Stan Collymore believes that we are yet to see a lot more from him.

Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, the former Liverpool striker said, “I don’t agree with GW [Georginio Wijnaldum]. I don’t think he’s hit his straps yet. SM [Sadio Mane] has made a really good start. He has been a little bit hit and miss.”

While I don’t agree that Wijnaldum has “been a little bit hit and miss”, if we are yet to see the best of Gini Wijnaldum, that can only mean good things for a side that has now gone 11 games unbeaten in all competitions and has managed to take 23 points from an available 30 in their opening 10 games.
