According to the Liverpool Echo, Jurgen Klopp hasn’t given up on Georginio Wijnaldum and the Dutchman is receiving intensive medical treatment.
Liverpool’s £25 million signing picked up what was thought to be a hamstring injury. As it turns out, Wijnaldum is suffering from a hip issue. The former Newcastle man went for scans yesterday and it was revealed that the injury isn’t as serious as was initially believed.
While Wijnaldum’s injury isn’t long-term, there is no return date as of yet but that isn’t stopping Jurgen Klopp from working to have his midfield stalwart fit in time to face Manchester United on Monday.
Liverpool’s number 5 is undergoing intensive treatment in a bid to have him return to training before United make the short trip to Anfield. The medical staff at Liverpool haven’t ruled him out and Klopp will hope he can make a miraculous recovery.
Despite many fans questioning Wijnaldum’s move to Liverpool, the Dutchman has been brilliant and his diligent work alongside Jordan Henderson is a large part of why the Reds have done so well this season.
If Wijnaldum doesn’t make an acceptable recovery, Emre Can or Lucas Leiva could be in line to start in midfield. Both are suitable replacements and can mirror the defensive cover that Wijnaldum provides.
While Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren have returned to training and should be fit to play, Adam Lallana is still a huge doubt. His groin injury hasn’t healed entirely and Klopp may be forced to leave him out as a precaution.
More will be clearer closer to Monday, but for now that’s all we have for you.
