Geoffrey Kondogbia’s agent has said that the midfielder has plenty of options should he leave. Is Liverpool one of these options or is it total bullsh*t?
Liverpool was linked with the signing of Geoffrey Kondogbia at the beginning of October and I said that there is no chance of the Frenchman signing for the Reds. I maintain that stance, however, recent media speculation would indicate that I am wrong.
For those of you who don’t already know, Kondogbia moved to Inter Milan last season from AS Monaco in a deal worth £27 million, but his time with the Italian side has been less than rosy.
He has missed three out of five of Inter’s most recent games. In the two that he did feature in, he didn’t last the full 90 minutes. Frank De Boer hasn’t been shy to publicly criticise Kondogbia, but should he leave, his agent says that there are several clubs that would be interested in him.
“Despite the current situation, Geoffrey is relaxed. There are no problems and he is happy at Inter,” agent Jonathan Maarek told TuttoMercatoWeb, as reported by the Mirror.
“Kondogbia is certainly a top level player. He has a lot of quality and is very young, so obviously he has a lot of clubs interested in him.
“Can I name them? I will just say that he is not lacking interested clubs.”
But are Liverpool interested? I just don’t believe that Jurgen Klopp would be keen on another midfielder at this point. Especially a player like Kondogbia, who, while undoubtedly talented, is not the typical midfielder that Klopp looks for.
Kondogbia has been compared to Paul Pogba with both midfielders hailing from France and being of muscular builds. While very few people would turn down a player of Pogba’s pedigree, Kondogbia is not all that.
Then again, the last time Liverpool signed an out of favour midfielder from Inter Milan it was one of the best signings in the club’s recent history. Philippe Coutinho is a vastly different player, not just in build but in the position he plays.
Liverpool signed Marko Grujic in the summer and he isn’t exactly a diminutive midfielder. At 6 ft. 3′ he is a very tall player and it may be that Klopp is looking to strengthen Liverpool’s midfield in the future. Not inconceivable.
If Klopp signs Kondogbia, then he will have my support. I just can’t imagine him spending the requisite funds on a player who doesn’t really suit the style of play or wouldn’t necessarily get into the team.
